This past Thursday, we had the pleasure of presenting a webinar with Purvi Shah, former Executive Director of Sakhi for South Asian Women.  During the webinar, Purvi shared some of the lessons she learned while serving at the helm. And Bix and I shared our perspective (the consultant perspective) of what it takes to be a successful ED
Some of the lessons shared:

• Understand that you are always creating your legacy…you represent the organization’s vision, mission in action, strategy for impact, and reputation.
• EDs have too many hats for all of them to fit well – so build, nurture, and support a great team.  Let go of the minutiae… and let others do their jobs.
• Giving in is not giving up: choose your battles wisely because not everything is a crisis and everyone loves to win.
• Make space to take risks and make mistakes!  That is how innovation happens.
